THE GLOBALIZATION PROJECT
For this project, we dove deep into the world of globalization where we looked into many sources, such as videos and articles and got a good idea of what globalization is. Once we had a good understanding of what globalization is we looked at some good examples of an opinion editorial. This was so that when we found a topic we were interested in we could write an opinion editorial for ourselves. Though it wouldn’t be an Animas High project without art, so along with our opinion editorials we will have a political cartoon.
This project has let me gain tons of new knowledge. What I mean by this, is that the project has helped me learn more than any other project this year. I learned what globalization is, and the effects it has on our world. The main globalization topic I studied was Coca-Cola in the third world. I realized that while Coca-Cola is the 3rd biggest brand in America, though it wasn’t really helping us. It was actually hurting us. In India Coke was sucking up all the water and while the same thing is happening in Mexico it is also causing the overall obesity rates to rise. This is what I argued in my opinion editorial.
Well with every paper I write I always gain a couple new skills. Some of those skills were specifically writing an Op-Ed, one thing I have never done before. To write an opinion editorial you must be able to keep to one idea per paragraph. While this should be a skill that you should have no matter what paper you are writing, It was one skill I learned writing an Op-Ed. Another skill I learned was keeping my paragraphs short enough so that I wasn’t rambling on and on and just getting my facts and main idea in. This was a very big challenge for me and you can really see this in my first 2 drafts. Though as you get to my third draft it is a lot more refined in areas that were originally work areas. My writing for this assignment has changed a lot, in past writing assignments I was just writing to persuade someone on a topic that we were studying, this project though and this Op-Ed allowed me to actually tell someone about a topic I felt strongly about.
I learned a lot of things while working on my political cartoon. One of those things was being able to express what you are trying to say with limited words and only pictures. This was also a challenge. In my first cartoon I felt that I had too many words, so in my second draft I had to change it. But then I was worried if people would understand. Overall this cartoon not only helped me tune my art skills but also being able to express a topic using only pictures. One thing that I believe will be needed later in high school and life.
